Hit The Pot Of Gold With Scholarships In The Golden State!

California is world renowned for its ecological, economical, and ethnological diversity. Couple this with a tradition of eccentricity and individuality, and it creates some wide and varied types of scholarships. Yes, there are some good generic financial aid packages, but they also include some more specialized plans for a number of professions and careers such as the following.
One of the largest scholarship plans offered within the state is the California Alumni Association Scholarship. It is actually two different plans, one merit-based, the other need based. To qualify for the Leadership Award, a student must have a 3.3 GPA and then maintain a 3.0 average throughout the rest of his or her academic career. It can go for five years and awards $1,500 for freshmen and sophomores and $2,000 for upperclassmen. Out-of-state transfers can get a supplemental $500 to go to a California school.
The Achievement Award is for students who meet the same criteria as the Leadership Award, but come from much tougher financial backgrounds. It will award up to $6,000 and a laptop computer per academic year for up to four years. They also only need a 2.0 grade point average in a number of independent cases.
California also participates in the national Robert C. Byrd Honors program. This plan offers $1,500 a year to students who meets the state's qualifying criteria, which includes a 3.5 grade point average and top ACT/SAT score. It also can be used at any university in the country.
If you are planning a career in health care or medicine, there are a few programs for you, too. Most prominently is the Kaiser Permanente Allied Healthcare Scholarship, which awards $3,000 to $4,000 a year to students who attend an in-state university and especially for health education. There is also the Alice Newell Joslyn Medical Fund, which awards anywhere from $500 to $2,500 to Latin American students studying health care.
