The scholarship you receive is highly affected by the college major that you choose. The classes you take can shape your perspective on your major and the way you approach certain situations. Also, the students you meet in your classes may also shape who you socialize with and how you perceive your career. Scholarships are high affected by the major of your choice. There are many state and federal grant and loan programs targeted at specific college majors.
The most common career fields for these types of programs are education, healthcare, engineering, and mathematics as well. Students pursuing degrees in these fields may find many financial aid opportunities available to them because of the major they choose. However, if your passion doesn't lie in education, healthcare, science, or some of the other majors that I have mentioned, there are still many reasons to pursue your major, and many scholarships give financial aid to students who pursue other majors as well.
Scholarships look for specific skills students have when giving out awards. These skills include original thinking, creative writing, great research skills, etc. Students with great writing skills in English and journalism will find that many essay scholarships will be easier for them to attain. Competitions that ask for artwork may want students to draw, design original pieces, anything to prove their worth for receiving the financial aid. Some scholarships will be mostly available to students aiming for a smaller major, or minor. In addition to the financial aid programs for specific majors, colleges and independent scholarship providers also give out scholarships by major. Many colleges also receive financial aid from donations given to them to provide financial aid for students. These amounts are often fairly small, but since you're only competing with other students at your specific college, they may be fairly easy to get.
