Scholarships Made For Tennessee Residents
Like a few other states in this country, Tennessee uses the revenue generated from its state lottery to finance college financial aid. They call this system HOPE, and it appears to be doing its share in getting academically deserving students into nearly one hundred institutions of higher learning inside the state borders. This not only includes the classic academic university system, but also technical/vocational schools.
The basic qualifications to receive a HOPE Scholarship are the applicant must have lived in Tennessee for at least the last year, preferably graduating or getting a GED locally. They must also enroll at one of the preselected 90 plus schools. The state does allow home schooled students to apply, and has a separate application process for this. Overall, an applicant needs a grade point average of 3.0 or better with similarly good ACT and/or SAT scores.
Meet the various criteria, and it opens the doors to four different scholarships. The primary plan is called the HOPE Access Grant. It will annually supply $4,000 for a four-year institution or $2,000 for a two-year school. It is important to realize that if your GPA falls below 3.0 two years in a row, you could lose this money.
For those who want to pursue some sort of technical certification, there is the Wilder-NAIFEH Technical Skills Grant. To qualify, a student must enroll in one of the state's approved technology centers. It awards $2,000 annually, and if a graduate wants to eventually move on to a four-year program, he or she can still qualify for the HOPE scholarship.
From there, if the state deems there's even more financial need, the state set up the Aspire Award. It will provide an additional $1,500 a year if the student, or parents of the student, proves he or she earned less than $36,000 the previous year.
